Is Following Jesus Really Worth It?
When Jesus called people to follow Him, He never promised an easy life.
He didn't say,
"Follow Me and every problem will disappear."
He didn't promise wealth, comfort, or popularity.
Instead, He made a remarkable invitation:
"Take up your cross daily and follow Me."
At first glance, those words can sound difficult.
What does it mean to carry a cross?
Does God want us to suffer?
Does following Jesus mean giving up everything we enjoy?
To understand Jesus' words, we need to see them through the eyes of the people who first heard them.
What Did the Cross Mean in Jesus' Time?
Today, the cross is a symbol of hope, salvation, and God's love.
But when Jesus spoke these words, the cross represented something very different.
It was an instrument of execution.
It symbolized sacrifice, humility, and complete surrender.
So when Jesus told His followers to take up their cross, He was inviting them to live a life fully devoted to God—even when it required sacrifice.
He wasn't asking them to carry a wooden cross every day.
He was calling them to place Him above everything else.
1. Denying Yourself Doesn't Mean Hating Yourself
One of the biggest misunderstandings about this passage is the phrase:
"Deny yourself."
Jesus wasn't saying your life has no value.
He wasn't asking you to ignore your God-given gifts or live without joy.
Instead, He was teaching us to surrender our own desires whenever they conflict with God's will.
Sometimes that means choosing forgiveness over bitterness.
Choosing honesty over convenience.
Choosing obedience over comfort.
Following Jesus often requires saying,
"Lord, not my will, but Yours be done."
2. Taking Up Your Cross Is a Daily Choice
Notice one important word in Luke 9:23:
Daily.
Following Jesus isn't a decision we make once and forget about.
It's a daily commitment.
Every morning, we choose:
Will I follow Christ today?
Will I trust Him today?
Will I love others today?
Will I obey Him today?
Faith is strengthened through consistent obedience, one day at a time.
3. Following Jesus Will Sometimes Cost You Something
Living for Christ may not always be easy.
You may face criticism for standing by biblical values.
You may need to forgive when it's difficult.
You may need to remain honest when dishonesty seems easier.
You may choose kindness when others choose anger.
These moments are opportunities to reflect Christ.
The cost may be real, but so is the joy of walking closely with Him.
4. The Cross Leads to Life
Jesus never called us to surrender without purpose.
Immediately after speaking about taking up our cross, He said:
“For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for Me will save it.”— Luke 9:24 (NIV)
This is one of the great paradoxes of the Christian life.
When we surrender our lives to Christ, we don't lose what matters most—we discover it.
Real life is found in Him.
5. How Can We Follow Jesus Today?
Following Jesus is more than attending church on Sundays.
It is choosing Him in everyday life.
Here are a few practical ways:
📖 Spend Time in God's Word
The Bible teaches us God's character and helps us recognize His voice.
🙏 Pray Consistently
Prayer keeps our hearts connected to God and reminds us that we depend on Him.
❤️ Love Others Well
One of the clearest ways to follow Jesus is by showing His love through our words and actions.
🌍 Live with Integrity
Honor God at work, at school, at home, and online.
Faith should influence every part of our lives.
🤲 Serve with Humility
Jesus came not to be served, but to serve.
As His followers, we are called to reflect that same heart.

What does following Jesus look like in my current season?
Am I choosing comfort over obedience?
Remember, taking up your cross isn't about earning God's love.
It's about responding to the love He has already shown us through Christ.
